Dan the second part of your statement, I don't think hold true for the 
large majority of cyclists IE feeling they have the option to be car free.

I have a picture of myself trying to get 8 feet pieces of lumber home to 
build bookshelves with only my bike or getting my five cats to the vet 
for thiers yearly shots with only my bike or when I own one, towing the 
trailor holding my ultralight to Homestead airport with only my bike.

Or cycling to work 18 miles in driving rain and high wind or.......

Cycling is fun and is also useful as a transportation mode in some cases, 
but as a only mean of getting around, no way would I wish that.

I love the ability that all mode of our transportation sytem give me, the 
bike for fun and healthfull short distance transportation, the van for 
hauling and longer distance transportation and planes for world wide travel.

So how does these car haters get those 8 feet pieces of lumber home? Not 
by bus or rail or bike that for sure!

What to bet they go crying to some friend who is not car free<grin>.
