You're right -- being "car-free" is quite hard. Our infrastructure sucks. However, one can still cut ones personal motorvehicle use at least 95% without being an absolutist. True -- when it's time to haul 8 foot lumber, rent a truck, or arrange for the lumber company to truck it to you. That's how often? Car haters object to the daily use of cars. Vegetarians object to the consumption of meat, although the occasional squirrel gets squashed by the produce truck, and countless insects perish in the farming process. This doesn't mean they are wrong. For the rare trip in truly unridable weather, I take the bus. If I couldn't, I'd take a shuttle or taxi. If I couldn't, I'd rent a car. Still, my annual miles are probably 10% yours. Last year I logged around 1000 miles in private motorvehicles (total, driving or passenger, most involved in getting to cycling events...), and over 10k by bike. Do I claim to be "car free"? No. I didn't get any of these stickers. But don't put me on the same level as the 15k/year SUV driver. Dan P.S. I am reminded of fat free foods, which can still contain fat. "Fat free" whipped cream contains, err, cream.... William Meredith wrote: > (being car free involves many challenges)
