From Bloomers to Bicycle Shorts. Until late in the 19th century, women
were not encouraged to participate in vigorous physical exercise. They
bathed but did not swim; they performed gymnastics, but only those exercises
considered "suitable" for the female constitution. Even these mild exertions
required specialized dress that was both modest and accommodating to
movement. The creation of bloomers (covered by a skirt) was an important
breakthrough that contributed to dramatic changes in women's lives and their
dress. NMAH curators Claudia Kidwell and Ellen Hughes discuss the
revolutionary idea of athletic clothing for women in the 19th century,
illustrating their ideas with photos from the period as well as museum
objects, including a rare 1895 woman's bicycling ensemble and a 1900 bathing
dress.
1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Reception Suite, first floor, National Museum of
American History. Free and open to the public, but space is limited.
Registration is required. For more information, please call (202) 357-1593.
