With the clearance restrictions that you have on a road bike, I would
recommend that you look at the Continental Top Touring 2000. They come
in a 700x28C size that has a fairly low profile (as well as larger sizes
that may fit). They are fairly quick aon the street and have a recessed
V-type tread that should handle loose stuff as well as any other fast
tire. Vittoria also makes a 28C cyclocross tire under the GEAX
brand-name, but the narrow knobbies, while good for traction, tend to
wear quite quickly on pavement. The Conti's are in the premium price
range ($30 each) and the Vittoria/GEAXs are somewhat less. You can find
these fine tires at City Bikes, as well as at other quality local
retailers :-).

P.S.- I ride the Contis on my commuter & love 'em. Great versatility,
awesome durability/puncture resistance, and I rarely get passed!
