I was told over and over again that I would never be successful,
that I was not going to be competitive and the technique was
simply not going to work. All I could do was shrug and say "We'll
just have to see".
- Dick Fosbury, who won an Olympic gold medal at the 1968
Mexico games after he invented a revolutionary high-jump
technique.

1) Is our grand vision of the National Bicycle Greenway just another
version of the now famous Fosbury Flop? In all probability it will be! I
mean how much more can we go against the grain when the whole way America
goes about its daily living is working against us? For far too many, cars
and the roads that support them are the only way of life they know.
Many used to find great humor in Fosburys smaller victories but doubted
that he would ever have the tremendous degree of success that he ended up
having. Nor did they ever expect that his style would influence the whole
new levels of leapers that would raise the bar for high jumpers the world
around. He was different. But he stayed with it. And that is how we have
got to accept ourselves and the challenge before us if we are going to hit
paydirt.
To tell your neighbor or casual friend that you are giving of your time,
money or bicycle riding efforts to help build a coast-to-coast network of
bicycle highways may cause them to dismiss you as a dreamer only needing
to fill some of the excess time you may have on your hands. And yet
therein lies the key. Keeping after it long beyond the point where its
novelty has worn off.
Really digging in there, rolling your sleeves up when it gets to be just a
little bit hard. Shrugging your shoulders as did Fosbury and just staying
with it. Thats the mark of a champion.
Whether its sticking to the training regimens we have outlined at
http://www.bikeroute.com/S2KNewsletter
or keeping the word out there with our posters and handouts, etc, if you
keep after it the rewards will be nectar sweet!
Lets all do the Fosbury in the words ahead as we jump into the next
millennium with a success that has no comparative equal!
