I had the opportunity to visit Washington during the first two weeks of January. I took my mother to the Wurzburg Haus on Muncaster Mill Road in Rockville. I think it easily ranks as one of the best German restaurants in the DC area, at the very least the best overall value. I had the Bratwurst with bread dumplings, my mother had the Sauerbraten with potato pancakes. Both were well-prepared, from fresh ingredients, and in sizable portions. They also have several brands of German beer, both in bottle and on tap (I had a bottle of Wurzburger Hoffbrau). The total, including drinks and dessert, came to about $30. Plusses: 1. Fresh food, authentically prepared by a good chef 2. Easy to get a table on a Saturday night (we were there around 6pm) 3. Outstanding value Minuses (one big one, and one minor one): 1. Uneven service: The adjoining table got a waiter who described the daily specials, kept their water glasses filled, and generally exuded politeness and desire to please. While our waitress wasn't rude, we weren't told about the daily specials and had to flag her down for more water. Also, much of the staff simply hung around the bar chatting about the latest Redskins game (they could at least sit in the kitchen out of sight). I left less of a tip as a result. 2. Dessert: The Black Forest cake wasn't authentic. The filling was mostly whipped cream, with only a few cherries, and the cake was barely chocolate. Of course, if you're not a dessert-eater, this is a moot point. Overall impressions are good. You won't complain about portions that are too small or a check that is too big. I give it 3 stars out of a possible 5. Paul W. Schleck pschleck@unomaha.edu
