I finally got around to following up on my request for New Mexican restaurants in the DC area by going to one. There were four of us, including three people rather familiar with native NM food. We went to the southern Anita's in Vienna, next to the car wash. (Since we were coming from Greenbelt, picking the closest one wasn't important.) Four different entrees yielded basically the same result; the food resembled New Mexican food far more than, say, Burger King, but if I were back in New Mexico and could go to Anita's or somewhere else, I'd go somewhere else. The spanish rice I had was rather crispy, although the other three folks got good rice. The entrees seemed well prepared, but some of the ingredients were questionable. The cheese on the taquitos resembled cheese whiz far more than it should have, but the taquitos themselves were good. The green chile was mild in the extreme, slightly hotter than pickles, although that might be expected in this time zone. The dwarf sopapillas had something wrong, and tasted remarkably like apple fritters with no apples. On the other hand, it may be extreme to expect food the same here as out West; Anita's is several leagues ahead of Chi Chis, and cheaper too. Our reviewers' feelings on scales from 1-10: As a restaurant 6 7 6.5 7.5 As a New Mexican restaurant 4 2 3 3 The preceding review represents only the opinions of us, and should be regarded as nothing more. - Tom Jones NM Tech student 1987-1992
