Welcome to the area.  I've lived in College Park about 5 years.  Most
places along Route 1 cater to 18-22-yr-olds, and I'm not in that group.
 
Some places I've encountered:
 
   Bentley's Garage, on Rte. 1 near Knox Rd:  Good place to sit and eat a
   nice sandwich.  Waiters/waitresses are pleasant, though the past few
   times I've been there they've *really* been spacey.
 
   As a matter of fact, the corner of Rte. 1 & Knox is *filled* with bars
   and restaurants.
 
   Further north on Rte. 1 there are restaurants inside motels.  Both the
   motels and their restaurant concessions keep changing names, though!
 
   You might have better luck exploring Greenbelt Rd (Rte. 193).  Check the
   areas near Beltway Plaza and in Greenway Ctr.  I've enjoyed Sir Walter
   Raleigh's Inn, behind a gas station near the corner of 193 & Kenilworth,
   and Jasper's, in Greenway.
 
There are no cheap restaurants anywhere in the northeast U.S.  Even the
coffee shops (such as Bob's Big Boy, on Rte. 1 south of UMD, or Denny's in
Greenway) aren't all that cheap.
