I've been following the discussion of DC restaurants
that started out a few weeks ago with someone's question
about where to go for Afghan food.

I collected the recommendations into a list, and thought you all
might be interested in the summary:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

                    AFGHAN RESTAURANTS

Afghani dishes bear the kind of resemblance to Indian food that Vietnamese
food does to Chinese -- clearly related, but not quite the same. The spices
tend toward slightly heavier flavors, but there's fragrant rice and some
yoghurt, plenty of garlic and good chicken. Try some cardimum tea
with your meal.

VIRGINIA:
--------
Panjshir Afghan Restaurant (a Washingtonian bargain restaurant)
   924 W. Broad St (703)536-4566

Coming from the Beltway, you'd take Rte 7 (which becomes West Broad St.)
"eastbound" (really southbound at that point, but /toward/ DC, not away
from it in any case). At about 2 miles from the Beltway,
the restaurant is on your left. (It's not far past a large,
long shopping center, also on the left, that includes a Giant
   Supermarket.)

Panjshir II
224 Maple Av W (Rt. 123), Vienna, VA.

Kabul Caravan (related to Kabul West in Bethesda)
on the river side of Wilson Blvd. just outside of Rosslyn.

Bamiyan II
on King St in Old Town Alexandria,

Ariana Afghan Restaurant
on Spring St in Herndon, VA. Ariana is the old name for Afghanistan.
Afganis seem to prefer this and Panjshir I and II to Bamiyan.

DISTRICT:
--------
Khyber Pass
at Connecticut and Calvert. Small and reasonably price and
   only open for dinner.

Bamiyan
   on M St in Georgetown

MARYLAND:
--------
Kabul West in Bethesda, MD

Helmand, on Charles (in Baltimore,
in an area with a couple of good
Indian places, a Vietnamese place, and others)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
                    JAMACIAN RESTAURANTS

DISTRICT:
--------
Wings and Tings
in Adams Morgan on 18th St., south from the intersection of Columbia and
   18th street, open evenings.

Montego Cafe
across the street from Wings and Tings; It's got a better
selection of food; It's also less expensive than Cafe Atlantico.

Cafe Atlantico
in Adams Morgan on Columbia, south from the intersection of Columbia and
	  18th street

MARYLAND:
--------
Jamaica Joe's
in Silver Spring, in a plaza on the corner of Georgia and Colesville Rd
   a lunchtime place

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
                    LEBANESE RESTAURANTS

VIRGINIA:
--------
Lebanese Taverna
Taverna 5900 Washington Blvd, Arlington, HIGHLY recommended.
about 2 miles east of the East Falls Church Metro.

WONDERFUL food., friendly people, they always have a soup
available, but there's no soup in the menu, ever.
They also have a market at 4400 Old Dominion Dr, Arlington

Samadi Sweets Cafe
   in Bailey's Crossroads.

DISTRICT:
--------
Lebanese Taverna (another one)
2641 Connecticut Ave, near the Woodley Park Metro.

MARYLAND:
--------
Bacchus
   in Bethesda

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
                    THAI-LAOTIAN RESTAURANTS

VIRGINIA:
--------
Bangkok-Vientiane (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - a Washingtonian bargain rest.)
926-A West Broad St (Rt 7) Falls Church, (703)534-0095

   Next door to Panshir, above.

Angkor Wat (Cambodian)
6703 Lowell Ave, McLean, VA Phone (703)893-6077
a block from the intersection of Old Dominion Dr and Chain Bridge Rd

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
                    VEGETARIAN RESTAURANTS

Food for Thought
On Connecticut Ave., north of Dupont Circle, between R and S.

Katmandu, Connecticut at S and Florida, just up from Food for Thought:
Nepalese; not exclusively vegetarian, but there's enough
	there.

Paru's, S Street between Connecticut and 19th: Indian; entirely
vegetarian. Greasy-spoon ambiance, and no waiter service,
but goooood food. Superb Mysore bisibela and, for the less
adventurous, dosas and curries. Closed Sundays.

The Olney Ale House
   in Olney MD, great bread!

Faisuda
Pakistani vegetarian, They closed up when their neighborhood was being
re-developed and were supposed to re-open.

Here's a list, dated 03-May-1990, of restaurants in DC that "have at
least three clearly marked vegetarian entrees." This comes from the
Vegetarian Society of D.C. (P.O. Box 4921, Washington, DC 20008,
301/589-0722). [Comments are Rick Chimera's.]
Full DC/Maryland/Virginia list is free from VSDC; include SASE with
your request.
