AL> From: andy@maxim.COM (Andy Lynn) AL> Newsgroups: dc.dining AL> Organization: MAXIM Technologies Inc., Vienna VA AL> AL> AL> I've been following this thread with some interest and want to AL> stick up for my home town, Great Falls, VA. We have a very nice AL> coffee purveyor, Gillette's by name, who roast on-site. They're AL> in the same row of shops as Erol's (ugh), just down from AL> the intersection of Rt 193 and Walker Road. Their prices compare AL> favorably with other good D.C. area shops... stop by for your AL> morning dose and try an almond pretzel! AL> AL> But I'd like to point out that one can also order from Zabar's AL> in N.Y.C. via their 800 number, shipped UPS. Don't have the AL> number handy; I'm sure 800 directory assistance does. I especially AL> like their "special blend", ~$4.00/lb. Zabar's seems to be unable AL> to stock anything but good fresh beans, given the volume they deal in. AL> Is their "Blue Mountain" at ~$7.00/lb "true" blue mountain? I'm AL> not sure, but its SO SMOOTH.... I've got a "personal" gripe about Gillette's, not a biggie and not really generalizable. They tend to do very dark roasts, or at least the couple of times I've been in they have. Their /lightest/ roast tends to be about at my limit of a /dark/ roast, and much of what they roast is FAR too dark for me to enjoy. I know, I know -- I'm just a wimp, and why don't I drink instant if I've got no guts for the real thing. And so on. But really -- anybody looking for a roast that's along the lines of American or even Danish Breakfast -- you just won't find anything that light in Gillette's. (I'm pretty sure they'd do a custom roast, however, if requested. I just haven't bothered.) * Origin: 3 Point 14159 (1:109/70.4214)
