A few places I've shopped with my boyfriend (who is a vegetarian):

  Hugo's Market - Livingston Street, NW, right off of Connecticut Ave. in DC
  Fresh Fields - Rockville Pike and (the name of the cross street escapes me
                 a supermarket for PC food purchases.  Organically grown and
                 vegetarian supplies and ready-made dishes.
  Beautiful Day (I think that's right) - College Park, MD  If you call I can
                probably give you directions.  Small grocery store/health
                supply store, with a cafe in back.

As for restaurants, the only ones I can think of off the top of my head that
serve "American" vegetarian food are "Food for Thought" near Dupont Circle,
and "The Olney Ale House", in Olney MD.  I haven't been to the first, and the
second has a somewhat limited menu, but good, home-style food.
