ER> When Reston was planned, ER> however, in the early ER> Sixties, there wasn't any such thing as a "regional shopping ER> center." Sorry to disagree with you, but the first enclosed malls of the type and size you refer to as regional shopping centers had already opened in the Twin Cities. Perhaps you have heard Garrison Keillor refer in some of his "ads" for Bertha's Kitty Boutique to the "Dales--Mondale, Chippendale, Smithndale,..."? He is satirizing the various regional shopping centers of the St. Paul-Minneapolis area, which began with Southdale in 1960 or so(still in existence and somewhat larger than it was then) and later included Rosedale, Brookdale, Ridgedale, and perhaps some others I can't think of. They were all developments of the Dayton-Hudson Co., although I believe that they have since been sold off. I think they all have a Dayton's as one of the anchor department stores. Reston will have to come up with some other reason for its feeble shopping areas. I do agree that the regional shopping center concept got to the East Coast rather later than other places, beginning out here in maybe the early 70's--why D-H was so far-sighted is a question I'll leave to the economic historians.
