I have a few suggestions for Indian food.

Washington:
Rajaji's is the best Indian food (for its price) in DC in my opinion.
They're very consistent (unlike Maharaja it seems), and the prices are very reasonable ($7-$12 for entrees). Better than average ambience (whatever that
means). They're located right opposite the Woodley Park-Zoo metro stop.

Columbia:
The Bombay Peacock. Quite nice atmosphere. The best Indian food in Columbia
(they're the only one actually). A little on the expensive side ($8-$16). They
do seem to have the most variety that I've seen actually. One big problem that
I have with Indian restaurants in this country is that they all serve the same
crap (Murgh Makhni, Lamb Kadhai, etc.). They're all Mughlai cuisine, which only
10% (possibly) of the Indian population eats. There's so much more ethnic stuff
that no restaurant seems to indulge in (Bengali, Marathi, etc.) which are nothing
like the Mughlai stuff. Anyway, the Bombay Peacock seems to be a little on the
experimental side -- a welcome change.
By the way, if you ask for a scotch and s., better ask them to make it a
stiff one (otherwise it's rather weak).

Baltimore:
Akbar's. Nice, expensive. More North Indian fare.
