Haussner's has its ups and downs, but frankly I was a bit underwhelmed by the veal dishes. Their wurst is better than most, I suppose, and the desserts are quite good, but it's more of a Maryland/German hybrid. Really, I haven't found a great German restaurant yet. Old Europe (Wisconsin Ave., north end of G'town) is the best I've tried locally, with Dortmunder on tap, good meat dumplings and a reasonable facsimile of schweinshaxen. The interior is a mixture of kitsch (a huge but crude sailboat model dominates the ceiling, and various handpainted state flags placard the walls) and taste (behind the hostess stand is a swell collection of antique clay pipes; some of the decorative steins are nice). In a pinch, the Wurzburg Haus (somewhere off Muncaster Mill Rd., I think...is that Olney?) has passable sausages and Tyrolian dumplings.
