This isn't quite on topic, but there isn't a "dc.drinking" newsgroup. Yesterday my wife and I attended "Brewing with a Belgian Accent," a Smithsonian seminar, at the Brickskeller near DuPont Circle. A panel of three brewers, representing The Bewer's Art (Baltimore), Brewery Omemgang (Cooperstown, NY), and Unibroue (Chambly, Quebec) discussed what Belgian style brewing was all about, including (of course) their own products. The event featured samples of ten different beers, in small plastic cups. I'd say the total volume was about the equivalent of three regular beers, or maybe a little more. That was plenty for us, but several parties in the audience kept the Brickskeller staff busy with orders for additional libations. Most people also ordered food, ranging from starters to full meals. The crowd was mostly older, perhaps because of the $65 entrance fee. Or maybe it just takes a while to become a beer snob. I thought it was worth the money. The beers were excellent. All three brewers had interesting stories to tell about their operations and about the varieties of Belgian beer. The Smithsonian does beer- or wine- related seminars like this fairly regularly. It's worth keeping an eye on their web site for future opportunities. Dav Vandenbroucke davanden at cox dot net
