Actually, if you consult back issues of some of the automotive magazines, you
may find that they proved that a reasonably good driver could stop shorter on
dry pavement w/o ABS.  The only situations where ABS showed a marked improvement
was on snow/ice, and where different wheels were on different surfaces (like
riding the edge of the roadway.)
