I had this theory for an automated system which uses radar to detect
speeders, then a solid steel barrier, similar to the ones used for
anti-terrorist protection, pops up out of the roadway a millisecond or
two before the car gets there, smashed the car, drops it into a
vehicle crusher under the highway, flips down the barrier and then
spits up a nicely compacted square of metal by the roadside to be
picked up for recycling.

Sort of a "Bambi meets Godzilla" kind of thing.
