Well, if you're that quick to realize that there's a problem and turn around and look in less that that 1.6 second reaction time then fine. Maybe I can brake in less that 1.6 seconds, too.

So it makes the chances of encountering a pedestrian extremely rare, and one that is in the roadway even rarer.

Yes. I'm discussing relative risk and you seem to be gravitating to what is legal.

It was 40% of the figure for increased distance of the vehicle's performance. OK, that's significant. Could be critical if you're sliding toward a cliff. <G>

Once again - I'm discussing relative safety, and you're trying to discuss what is legal. As a mater of relative safety, I reduce my risk of being run down from behind by going a bit faster. It
works. The math says so. What the judge says about it is irrealvent to my getting hit from behind. In fact, the judge can say whatever he wants to as long as I'm _alive_ in court to hear it,
rather than being flattened by some 90 mph 18 wheeler that went to sleep and which I didn't see coming because I didn't have as much time because I was being "safe" and "doing the limit".

I am totally unconcerned with anyone interpreting my reasoning as "excuses". I'm just saying what works for me, and why. My results prove that it works. That's all I need.

Examples, Earl, examples. You're not answering the question because you can't think of any either. Meteor from the sky, 200 feet wide and dead center on the median is the best I can do. But it
could come down within my stopping distance if I'm doing the limit, or the limit - 20, or on top of me if I'm stopped. Nothing I can really do to alter my chances with something like that. Still no
logical reason to slow to SL and increase my chance of getting hit from behind.

Gosh, that's about what I was getting ready to bring up. This discussion has run its course, and you can't refute my approach to safety with logic, and wish to retreat to what is legal. There's no
point in talking about that because I know its illegal - knew that when we started.

Well, its been fun. And no, you didn't piss me off. Have a nice day.
