You're supposed to be at least six car

I'm not sure where that comes form, Tony.  The rule is two seconds of time
between you and the vehicle ahead.  That comes to about a car length for
each 10 mph.  Of course anything that conservative is impossible to maintain
in rush-hour traffic.  More than a length and a half invites lane jumping.
Best bet is to maintain the farthest distance that keeps 85% of the idiots
from jumping in front of you, and look about 5-7 vehicles ahead to avoid
rear-ending someone yourself.
