Actually, I've found that if I'm going fast enough to pass quickly, many
drivers will leave the left lane to let me pass. However, it often happens
that gaining slowly gets much less response. I can actually understand it
too, because I often am overtaken by cars going slightly faster than me and
find that after I let them pass, they slow down in front of me. It seems
that being at the the head of a pack that's above the speed limit makes many
drivers more fearful of being ticketed. Having had this experience many
times makes me reluctant to pull over a lane for someone who creeps up on me
slowly. Of course, there are drivers who want to control and/or punish
anyone who wants to go faster than they do. Others seem not to care so much
about getting anywhere as keeping their place in line or making sure no-one
gets ahead of them.
