There are dinosaurs and there are dinosaurs (and dyno-soars). The big
improvement in manufacturing that the Japanese learned from Deming was
to try to get everything exactly to spec, rather than within tolerances.
American companies finally came to that, too. That is the biggest
difference in manufacturing the engine between a '57 Chevy and the V8
Caprice (I was under the impression that most taxi companies used sixes, but
I don't really know - they _used_ to). The other big difference is in bearing
and other materials, both in content and quality. More recently, using
roller bearings has helped valve trains last longer. That is why I never
had to open up the engine in my '86 Lincoln in over 200K miles. And I
still see it driving around a couple years after I sold it!

Note that even Lotus went to a V8.

I agree. As someone else posted, more complicated systems.

It's certainly fair to say that modern inducted engines are more reliable
than older normally aspirated engines. It may not be fair to compare
modern V8s to older V8s in reliability. I find that Saturn commercial
about the 300K car that only had the drivers seat go bad... suitable for
tabloid TV.
