When I commuted to Silver Spring I drove from Reston on Toll Road
(pre-HOV changes) to 495 to 29 to Randolf Road and it took me 40 minutes.
I also tried taking Metro but it was a 2hr+ commute and longer if
a missed connection occured. Since you live near Court House station
I would suspect that it would take about an 1&1/2 hrs - less than your
estimate; you should check to see if there is an express bus to Cherry
Hill area - before the new stations past Silver Spring opened there
was express bus on 29.

One option you may not have considered - if you do not need your car
every evening you can leave it at metro in Maryland and take
it to work from the station and back. On Fridays you drive home
rather than taking Metro to work. I think metro doesn't even charge
if you leave between certain hours - I know I have left metro
at some late/very early hours and was not charged.

Fortunately you live in Virginia and work in Maryland;
far more traffic seems to come from Maryland to work in Virginia.
I would hate commuting MD -> VA.
