If I did that I would be be going quite a bit slower than I had set out
to do.

Show me how to use your 'left..right...left...right' strategy to safely
go at my desired speed, without being cited by a cop, and you might
convince me.  Remember, I don't like to change lanes until I see at
least a 4-second gap.  And also remember that I like to signal ahead for
at least 3 seconds before a lane change.  And also remember that cops
love to spot speeding motorists by watching for those repeatedly
changing lanes, especially if they make themselves visible by signalling
their lane changes.

Would anybody in the SF Bay Area like to take me on a ride to show me
how to drive safely using your idea of lane discipline?  My requirements
are very simple:  Keep a 2-3 second following distance, signal all lane
changes at least 3 seconds ahead of time and merge into at least a
4-second gap in traffic, travel at a desired speed, don't get cited by a
police officer for any moving violation.  If you can do all this and
still go 'left..right..left..right' as you advocate above, maybe I could
treat you to lunch.
