Thanks, Bob.

A lot of people would agree with you.  But don't forget that the person
in your blind spot has to _get_ there.  He wasn't there when you got
into your car.  Some time between when you got into your car and now, he
moved into your blind spot.  If you have been truly paying attention all
around, he could not have done that without your noticing.  

Having said that, I admit that I'm describing an ideal situation.  I
know that I don't pay this close attention all the time, even though I
believe that I should.  For that reason, I'm not advocating _not_
shoulder checking.  But, if you see something when you shoulder check
that you didn't already know was there, it's a sign that you're not
paying enough attention to what's happening around you.  

So I stand by what I originally said (or meant, anyway), which is that a
shoulder check is redundant, in the engineering sense of the word. 
Redundant in that you do it only to cover yourself in case your primary
technique (situational awareness) fails.
