And of course, everyone heard of Jack Nicholson's little escapade, but
did the result get quite as much air time?

Nicholson's free; settlement wasn't

Copley News Service

03-May-1994 Tuesday

LOS ANGELES -- The People of the State of California vs. Jack Nicholson
ended abruptly yesterday with a convincing performance by an unlikely
player -- the target of the actor's golf-club attack.

A judge dismissed assault and vandalism charges against Nicholson, largely
because the Oscar-winning star paid an undisclosed sum in a civil
settlement to a now-forgiving victim.

To the chagrin of a prosecutor, the victim, Robert Scott Blank, 38, told
the court he wanted the matter dropped because he was satisfied with
Nicholson's apology for smashing his Mercedes-Benz windshield with a
three-iron golf club and showering him with glass.

Municipal Judge Martin Suits rejected arguments by Deputy City Attorney
Jeff Harkavy to press on with Nicholson's case because of the level of
violence. Blank suffered minor cuts on his nose in the Feb. 8 traffic
dispute in Toluca Lake.

Outside court, Harkavy said he was concerned that the public would feel
that the rich and famous can buy themselves out of trouble.

Nicholson's attorney, Charles English, contended that his client was
treated more severely because he is a celebrity. The actor, as allowed by
law, didn't appear at the arraignment proceedings.
