Does the concept of >driving courtesy not exist in California? I don't see the 'passing lane' concept as having anything to do with courtesy. It's merely something the faster drivers would like to have. (And I would like have more money.) The 'passing lane' concept works only if the highway is sparsely-enough populated such that all vehicles will fit in all lanes but one, and still maintain safe following distances. Then you can have one lane left almost empty. Last night, as I drove home at 12:45 am, I noticed that such was the case. I was happy to stay away from the leftmost lane, just in case a faster motorist came along. However, during most of the daytime driving hours, there simply is not enough highway capacity here to leave one lane unused. It's a waste of precious highway funds to build one more lane and then reserve it for use by a tiny minority of motorists. As it is, motorists generally follow too closely. It doesn't make sense to me to worsen the situation by squeezing them more to the right, leaving one lane empty and making following distances even shorter in the remaining lanes. -- Rahul Dhesi <dhesi@spams.r.us.com> a2i communications, a quality ISP "Life is an obstacle course.
