Fabrikant is often a pretty disgusting character, but on at least one point,
he's right and you are wrong, "Researcher." The Soviet Union was formed at
the end of the FIRST world war and not the second. The government of the
Soviet Union was in control of most of the territory of what ultimately
became the Soviet Union by 1922 or thereabouts with the treaties formally
annexing Ukraine, Belarus and so forth. Historians generally give Lenin
blame for the famine in Ukraine, for example; if it wasn't part of the
Soviet Union then they couldn't do so.

The Soviet Union continued to EXPAND after that date. Moldavia was annexed
in 1940 (though it had previously been part of Imperial Russia and Romania
took it as a war prize after the first World War) and Tajikistan was annexed
in 1929, Kyrgyzia in 1936 and so on.

Germany recognized the Soviet Union in 1922, the US in 1933. The 20 million
figure we hear is -- all historians agree -- nothing more than a guess. It
does NOT include the many millions dead in the famines before the war, in
the forcible relocations before the war, or in the purges and "show trials"
in 1936 (mostly). Those were part of another group, likely as large or
larger than the number who died during the war.

The German Nazi army wasn't a nice tidy group of gentlemen, and they
slaughtered millions in addition to the 7+ million in uniform. Many
millions more died from starvation, disease, etc. directly attributable to
the war. So many died that the 20 million figure can only ever be a guess,
but it's as fair a number as any and it relates specifically to the war.

Possibly more interesting, though, is Fabrikant really a murderer? And do
killers now get their own e-mail connections in our prisons?
