THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY ENSEMBLE
AND
THE MOUNT VERNON UNITARIAN CHOIR
IN CONCERT
FORREST TOBEY, DIRECTOR
FEATURING TWO WORKS FOR ENSEMBLE AND CONDUCTED ELECTRONICS
FOLLOWED BY CARRL ORFF'S CARMINA BURANA
The Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church in Alexandria, Virginia presents
an innovative concert featuring its 45 voice choir and a
professional chamber orchestra (performing under the name of "The
Twenty-first Century Ensemble"). The concert features two works
that employ a groundbreaking new interactive computer music
system for following the gestures of a conductor, allowing for
the precise and expressive control over the electronic aspects of
the performance. By using an infrared gestural sensing wand (the
"Buchla Lightning") and running software created by
conductor/composer Forrest Tobey, the computer becomes an
integrated member of the ensemble, responding to the conductor's
gestures as a trained ensemble member would respond, adjusting to
fluctuations in tempo, dynamics, styles of articulation and
timbral balance.

The Program:
Rejoice in the Lamb by Benjamin Britten
The organ accompaniment for this choral masterpiece has been
re-orchestrated for synthesized sound and is controlled by
the conductor in performance.
Three Etudes for Conducted Electronics and Orchestra by Forrest
Tobey
This world premiere features the precise interaction between
the 16-member chamber orchestra and the electronic aspects
of the composition through the use of the conductor-
following system.
Carmina Burana by Carl Orff
The concert will conclude with a performance of this
enduring classic (without electronics, of course).
