How about some more information?

For instance, what's the distribution, kernel, etc. 

What do you get from `uname -a` for instance. 

If you were able to get it to build, and you do 'make install' it should go
where it's expected to go, probably under /usr/local

Make sure that /usr/local/lib is in /etc/ld.so.conf and run `ldconfig -v`
and that should make sure that the libraries are seen. 

and as always, read the INSTALL and README files. 

I've gotten recent builds to work rather well, actually.
