For simple mapping tasks, ESRI's ArcExplorer (Java version)
runs under Linux.  ArcExplorer 4 even has an installer and
instructions for Linux, although the installer is probably
targeted at people who have used that same installer for other
ESRI products on other Unix systems.  Anyway, AE4 works well,
albeit with limited features.  The biggest limitation is 
that it doesn't alter the projection of the data.
