Anyway, AE4 works well, > albeit with limited features. The biggest limitation is that > it doesn't alter the projection of the data. I'm so clueless I can't even tell if we're talking about the same thing! I have a Garmin etrex vista GPS. I'm trying to use it, *not* to navigate (well, hardly ever), but to record points and routes I already know, and occasionally new ones I discover in the process. I interface it (under W98, alas!) with the following: Garmin's own MapSource Topo and MapSource Metroguide DeLorme TopoUSA 3.0 and 4.0 DeLorme 3-D TopoQuads (TN) National Geographic Mid-Atlantic USA (really Topo!) Maptech Appalachian Trail (the Virginias), which includes Terrain Navigator I then manipulate this data, as best I can manage, to study it, to print it out, and to email it or (mostly) screenshots of it to others. I do this both to further my and others' hunting, and to assist in the process of seeking a house to buy in Western VA as soon as my wife joins me in retirement. (So the ability to search snail addresses and pinpoint them on street maps or topo maps is useful, even if that may sometimes have to be done by uploading points from one program to the GPS and downloading from there to another program.) I've got this sneakin' hunch youss guyss're talkin' stuff way beyond my subtechnoid imagination, let alone grasp. And I suppose, alas!, that probably answers the basic question, doesn't it? Maybe five years from now .... But thanks, anyway! -- RR 'Beartooth' Neuswanger <karhunhammas (at) lserv.com> retiree & linux greenhorn w/RH 7.2 Keep in mind that I have no idea what I am talking about.
