I use a D-Link router/firewall, so no opinions on the Linux firewall
distros, but you should take a look at
http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=firewalls for a list and
comparison of firewall/router distributions.

When you are ready, consider supporting Dshield.org's centralized 
network intrusion database by submitting your sanitized firewall logs.  
This identifies net abusers and helps responsible ISPs shut them down. 
See http://www.dshield.org/howto.php for clients to automate log 
submission.

If your ISP assigns a dynamic IP address, you can get a fixed 
hostname+domain through a dynamic DNS (DDNS). A list of available 
services is at http://www.technopagan.org/dynamic/.  I use dyndns.org, 
which has a list of clients at 
http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/clients.html.
