SCSI Zip drive

I thought I would post this here for anyone looking to buy a SCSI zip
drive. First a note: It has a DB25 connector on the back, so if you
can find one, look for a DB25 out on a host adapter. They do have them,
but I think they are some of the "cheaper" host adapters. I say this
because I got ripped on the conversion cable. But I have Miniscsi
on the back. So I got twice as ripped.

So far, I've had what I would consider "Mickey the Dunce" installation.
Just plug it in and go. This is especially true of Linux (except for
mounting it... Not a problem). The only thing I can't remember is whether
I compiled in generic SCSI device driver. I I believe I did, so if you
are going to attempt this, it would be a good idea to recompile your
kernel.

The DOS end of the installation was actually WORSE than the Linux end.
I had to have all kinds of drivers. Basically the ASPI managers for
the board and so forth. This wasn't unexpected, but Linux was refreshingly
more simplistic.

Anyway, if you are thinking about getting one, I would recommend it. The
bad news is that the price of the disks has shot up since the drive was
introduced. Boxes of 10 disks used to be $100. Now, if you get them
through Comp USA they are $170. If you get them directly they apear to
be $200. Boxes of three seem to be $60 at comp USA. So I'm not really
sure you'd save anything by buying four of these (You do get 2 extra
disks, but the two extra cost an addition $35 apiece).

Anyway, it does make a fast addition to portable media. Also, something
cool about the Linux driver. Once you mount a disk, even the drive's
eject button (which is really a soft eject button) won't eject the disk.
But unmounting it will. So it is fairly robust.

If you are deciding on one, it is definitely worth it.

Brandon.
