GR> Is Linux System V UNIX (UGH!!!) ?

No; Linux is Linux. It contains no proprietary SYSV code. Linux is
intended to be POSIX-compliant.

GR> Does Linux have a good set of C++ tools?

It uses the GNU C++ compiler, which is still "under development" (as is
most GNU software). While GNU's C compiler, GCC, is generally
considered an excellent C compiler, GNU's C++ compiler, g++, is not
considered quite as "polished" from what I've heard.

I don't know what, if any, commercial C++ tools are available for Linux.
(I don't use C++ myself, nor keep track of anything related to it, due
to allergies.)

Yes. XFree86 3.1.x is X11R6-based.
