When I ran a Linux box on a 24/7 SLIP connection through Virginia Tech a couple of years ago, I found that 'nn' was great for that sort of rig. I had an hourly cron job that connected to the NNTP server and updated the subject databases for the groups that I "carried" onto my local disk. This allowed me to browse news quickly on my local system; only article retrievals themselves (i.e. those I wanted to read, not skip) needed to transfer data over the SLIP link during interactive news reading. The downsides to this are that it's really only effective if your host is up a good bit of the time, it involves extra administrative work, and it takes some local disk space to keep the database on. (I won't comment on 'nn' as a news-reader--that's a personal-preference sort of thing. I found it adequate for my needs, though I prefer GNUS.) --Up. -- Jeff Uphoff - systems/network admin. | juphoff@nrao.edu National Radio Astronomy Observatory | jeff.uphoff@linux.org Charlottesville, VA, USA | http://linux.nrao.edu/~juphoff/
