Am doing an installation on a friend's machine, and am getting the LILO hang-on-"LI"-during-boot problem. The docs say this is a "geometry mismatch" but I'm still not sure how to proceed. I wonder if anyone has successfully been through this ... Setup: 486/66; 2HD's Nontranslating BIOS, as far as I know. /dev/hda is a <500M Connor with DOS only; was there to begin with. /dev/hdb is a 1280M Connor listed as 2477/16/63. This resulted in many warnings from fdisk; so entered 825/48/63 in BIOS. This approach worked fine with my own WD 1.1G HD. Made 3 Linux partitions on /dev/hdb; 1st is root partition, 200M. Didn't write down the cylinders but I'm sure it doesn't require over 1024. Installed software; no problems. Can boot off floppy, log in, get prompt, everything looks fine. Installed lilo in MBR; when I boot off HD it hangs at "LI". Tried "linear" and reinstall lilo; no go. I suspect the problem may be the fake geometry I gave BIOS, but on the other hand fdisk and kernel have no problems with it, and it did choke on the 2477/... geometry - lot of complaints about logical/physical boundaries etc. any advice appreciated.
