See&Pee has a Resi ISDN trial in progress. It's far from being
great, but here's the scoop....
a) Hardware. You CAN but need not get their hw. They are offering:
(abbreviated by initial)
B_itsurfers (external)
I_SC Securelink II (ISA card)
W_aveRunner (ISA, but external NT1 [the U to ST converter])
They don't offer the Combonet 1000 card that DOES have a new
Linux driver.
Prices: B-$300, I-$275, W-$400. My finger in the wind says these
are good prices..below real wholesale.
Obviously the B_ with its 232 port won't need drivers. But the W_
offers several advantages:
1)External NT1 -- recall my speech about lightning?
2) Plus an external NT1 insures your ST bus is available
for other ISDN toys.
3) emulates 28.8 faxmodem.
4) v.110
Alas, I've seen no sign that any work is going on Linux drivers for
either I or W. Plus, serial port (B_)has several limitations.
BTW, C&P will show up, install cards and SW. & make system work.
Not sure how they'll do with Linux ;-|
Also free inside wiring. ("That's right - I need this jack installed
way WAY over there..." ;-) Turnkey.
The first 100 customers have FREE cards; can buy at conclusion or
not. As of Friday, they had about 75 folks.
b) Line.
There is no getting around the fact the beta tariff is one total
nightmare. It is 2c/min data days, 1c nights (0700-2100 is day).
Plus, the VOICE rate is 1.3c/minute, so the V.110 trick will do no
good at all.
So at first glance, there is no reason to even look at it. But I
think there is, and here is why:
The Business Tariff is 9c/CALL voice/v.110. So worst case,
you convert the line over to business rate in Sept; paying
not usual $100 ISDN install but a conversion charge (lots
less). Business line is ~~ same monthly cost.
The whole function of such a trial is marketing survey; we
will have chance to make input to them & tell them WHY
we're disconnecting....
In short, I'm going to go for it. If you're interested, call Scott @
800 204 7332 [tree down is 1, 3] and tell him I sent you.
