Why am I suddenly getting all these weird echoes -- and how
do I stop them?? I feel like a sorcerer's apprentice.

The first guy I asked said said:
> It looks like you've tampered with the PROMPT_COMMAND environment
> variable in either .bashrc or /etc/bashrc.
> If you produce gold from lead let me know.
So I got into /etc and tried 'pico bashrc' -- nothing about
echo there. Went back to btth and tried 'pico .bashrc' -- nothing
there either. (I was hoping for an extraneous-looking last line
containing echo that I could just delete.)
Any alchemists in the crowd??
