I don't know if my experience was typical, but I arrived at about 4:00 Sunday
3-4 weeks ago and picked up tickets for 6:00.

Advance tickets are available through ticketmaster (or is it ticketron)
for free. You do have to pay the $2.50/each service charge, though.

You can get tickets at the entrance to the Air and Space Museam (the
side away from the Mall) for free. You do have to wait in line, and
you can only get them for that specific day. If you get in line
before 9:30, you can get tickets for sometime before noon. If you get
in line before 10:00, you can probably get tickets for sometime during
the day. Tickets are typically sold out for the whole day sometime
before noon (on weekends).

The tickets (no matter how obtained) are only valid on a specific day,
during a specific quarter-hour (eg: Saturday the 1st, from 10:15 to
10:30). The exhibit will take about an hour to two hours to see, once
you are in. Audiotape tours of the exhibit are available for rent, as
well. The tape takes about an hour and a quarter.
