I was there about a month National Geographic has a building, I believe called "Explorer's Hall," a couple blocks north of the Natural-History-end of the mall (the location is rather vague in my memory). It's been a few years since I visited, but it was fun.

I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful suggestions regarding my trip to the Smithsonian. It's nice to hear what other people enjoy in order to get new ideas. If there is any interest in reviews of the suggestions made, let me know. I'll be more than happy to report back. Thanks again! Mary Brick e-mail: m15841@mitre.org

I was there this past weekend and once again it was fairly interesting. They
are currently having a photo exhibit of A) award winning photos and B) some show
on military cemetaries/monuments. I apologize that I just walked around and
looked at the photos, so I don't recall specifically why they were there but
there were a lot of humorus and moving pics of events and people around DC.
They also have a hand's-on half of the lobby which has various interactive touch
screen monitors such as a excellent animation of contenental drift (the
contenant Pangea(?), etc) with smooth movements of the contenents according to
how you drag your finger upa dn down the time line. They had a Tornado
booth which you could reach your hand into to disrupt a mist defined vortex.
The gift shop has all the neat junk you'd expect, in the way of books, posters
and maps, including a new modern world map with all those pesky Soviet and
Yugoslavian countries.
