Hello, I would like to realize a LAN with null-modem-serial-connections between several computers an operaring-systems. Questions: 1) I have heard that there ist a way to do so with the win95-os .... but how???? Something like SLIP-Connections??? 2) And if there is a way, how does it work on dos, win 3.11 or linux??? 3) How long might be the distances between the computers. 4) Can I also use a simple telephone-two-line-cable? 5) Is there a way with faster parallel-null-printer-cables? CU Matthias

How far apart are these various boxes? With 10/100BaseT cards in the under $25 range I can't imagine why you would do the ppp/plip stuff. I forget the distance limitations on serial ports (I'm thinking 300 feet but, it's been a while since I played with this). It seems to me that to go over a few hundred feet we had to get some 422 adapters that had add on power supplies. We finally tossed the serial adapters and ran Tut Systems XL600's (10BaseT for about 1200 feet on 1-pair cat3) over the one good pair we had available. Of course they will cost you >$600/pair. Run the linux box (or NetBSD) as a pppd server. No modem cruft is necessary. Have W9[58] make a ppp connection to the linux box. The unix side should probably run "persist" and "passive" definitely run any compression options that are available (that doesn't mean they will work). Parallel port connections are "PLIP" in Linux, NetBSD, ... . Parallel connections should see about 500K bits/sec. Most standard (came with the original motherboard) serial ports are 115,200 bits/sec (you should be able to get 75-90kbits/s or so with ftp). Somebody in "comp.dcom.cabling" will have the details and URL's for you (try a dejanews search first). Good luck, Paul -- Use that connection!! Idle connections are the devil's playground!! I, the Diabolical Ruler of the Universe, command it, OC-192 to every residence.
