Etwas primitiv, aber wie währe es mit:

    telnet your.newsserver.here 119       ; den nntp-port anwählen

    HELP LIST           ; Falls vorhanden Hilfstext zu LIST abrufen

    LIST [active]       ; mit dem "active" bin ich jetzt nicht so
                          ganz sicher. Aber so oder so ähnlich.

Den Output von Telnet kann man dann nach belieben auch noch in eine
Datei umleiten, nur muss man dann die Befehle blind tippen.
