Length of nullmodemcable

	Hi out there,

I'm going to set up a serial network with my A2000 & A1200. I want to
get access of the data stored on my lovely old "dinosaur" called A2000,
which is located in th basement of my house, with my A1200 via SERNET
	located in the 2nd floor.

I just want to know, if I can use a serial cable including RTS/CTS lines
with the length of nearly 30 meters for this. I have heard that a serial
connection has the big advantage of working on long distances, too.

Is it possible to connect two Amigas with their standard serial ports
on this distance without installing additional hardware like amplifiers ?

	MfG,

		Jens.

My understanding (and experience) is that serial does quite well, but your
maximum baud drops as you increase distance. I don't have the numbers handy,
but at a job I had in southern CA, we ran quite a distance at 9600 buad (not
quite 30 meters, though). Someone somewhere should have the actual figures.

I've been able to user serial cables of ridiculous lenths (certainly 30m)
working with PCs in our lab with no problems, and that was with various
gender changers, crossover boxes and the like. I was told by a technician
that the RS-232 spec allows for a wire length of up to 100 feet, but in
practice one can make them much longer.

I've used around a 20 meter cable between a 500 and 4000/030 for stunt car
racer etc. and i've not had any problems.

While in college, my roommate and I put together a couple of quite long
"dumb" null modem cables. What I mean by that is they were only three wires
(transmit, receive and ground) with no hardware handshaking wires in them.
One of them was 100 feet long and we could achieve 115,200 baud with it. The
other one was 250 feet long and, because of it's length, we had to lower the
baud rate to 57,600. Quite good for such a long cable!

Anyone answering this Question, if you have heard of a null modem cable
(not Parnet cable) for the Parallel port with a 25 male-male pin
configuration please let me know. Olso if yes is there an amiga program
to run this type of null modem?

Aloha! Richard
