This is less true than it once had to be. Once upon a time, the only
translation tool was the Microsoft Works "Works-to-Works" converter for
Apple File Exchange. Now the choices are greater. ClarisWorks (and several
other Claris products) ship with XTND translators for AppleWorks 2.0 and
3.0, word-processor, spreadsheet and (I think) database. The translators
were one of the main reasons I bought ClarisWorks. You can also use the
CrossWorks package for converting AppleWorks files (reads 2.0 and 3.0 on
the Apple II, but only writes 2.0 files - a real problem for many spread-
sheet files that would otherwise be capable of translation from the Mac
to the II). Lastly, there are the MacLink Plus Translators, which will
convert just about anything to anything (DOS - Mac - Apple II).

There may be other packages, and if the orignal data is not in plain text
or AppleWorks or WordPerfect format, then it all gets a lot messier.
