I'm not quite sure, whether the following infos refer to LaTeX only or to pure
TeX, as they are extracted from a LaTeX-Book.

The structuring hierarchy is:
( \part )          - not really part of the hierarchy
 \chapter          - not available in \article-style!
 \section
 \subsection
 \subsubsection
 \paragraph
 \subparagraph

As you want to get a numbering like "3.4.1.7", you'll have to change the
"secnumdepth"-counter to 4. So the sectioning commands will be numbered up to
\paragraph. Use

              \setcounter{secnumdepth}{<value>}

with <value> chosen from 0..5.
