Please post and distribute this announcement to potentially
interested people in your lab!
(My apologies if you get this announcement more than once!)

Post-Doc Opportunities, M.S. and Ph.D. Student Positions
in Computational Logic at Bilkent University
-----------------------------------------------------------------
If you are interested in computational logic, especially in
(deductive) logic program synthesis and transformation, but also
in related topics, such as program analysis, program
verification, program reuse, automated theorem proving, and if
you are looking for a good place to pursue research in this area,
then please read on.
Bilkent University (see http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/) is a modern,
private center of excellence in higher education and research,
beautifully located at the fringe of Ankara, in the Anatolian
heartland of the Republic of Turkey. Faculty members received
their Ph.D.s mostly from prominent universities in Europe and
North America. Research and publication standards are very high,
and there are many international cooperations. Research
facilities, such as computers, software, Internet connection,
books, journals, CD-ROMs, etc, are excellent and up-to-date.
Although Turkish-owned, Bilkent University follows the US
academic model, and the language of instruction and research is
English. _All_ students in the Computer Science Department are
on _full_ scholarships offered by the university, so entrance and
studies are very competitive. Graduated students pursue research
and find jobs at the very best institutions world-wide.
+ M.S. and Ph.D. candidates can apply twice a year, upon
sending a filled-in form, official transcripts, scientific
proficiency test scores (such as GRE general & subject tests
(see http://www.gre.org/), or a local exam to sit), English
proficiency test scores (such as TOEFL (see
http://web1.toefl.org/), TSE, TWE, or a local exam to sit,
except for native speakers), and two letters of
recommendation. Successful applicants are offered _free_
tuition, _free_ on-campus housing, and a handsome monthly
allowance (enough for comfortable life according to the
Turkish cost of life) for teaching assistantship duties. The
M.S. (resp. Ph.D.) is usually obtained in 2 (resp. 4)
years, with 8 courses to take (usually in the first year), and
a thesis on original research to defend. Candidate Ph.D.
students must have an M.S. (or equivalent) degree, and have
to pass a qualifying exam during the course of their studies.
Transfer students are welcome.
+ Post-doc candidates can apply any time of the year, with the
same services (under better conditions, and without teaching
assistantship duties) offered upon acceptance.
For further information, please contact Dr. Pierre Flener, who
would be your research advisor or your host, at:

Dr. Flener's research interests, and the project in which your
research would be set, are explained in detail in his research
homepage (http://www.cs.bilkent.edu.tr/~pf/research.html). You
may also want to have a look at the Bilkent University homepage
(http://www.bilkent.edu.tr/) and at the CS department homepage
(http://www.cs.bilkent.edu.tr/), in order to shape a better idea
of the environment.
The secular Republic of Turkey (see http://www.turkey.org/turkey)
often gets a bad press in Western media, so the potential
candidates (or their relatives) might be put off by reported
political, economical, or religious threats. As one of the
numerous Westerners living in Turkey (for 4 years now), all I can
say is that Turkey is largely misrepresented in Western media,
and that none of us feels insecure here (most actually feel much
more secure here than in their home-countries!). So if there is
anything I can do to assuage unwarranted fears, please contact me
rather than just dropping this announcement upon the mere
encounter of the phrase "in Turkey." Please gather insider
feedback rather than relying on uninformed hear-say.
