The purpose of fixing the signature separation line is quite simple..

1. Its the standard you should keep to it, its also what son of RFC1036
   says which although not being a standard is worth following.
2. Several newsreaders allow you to treat the signature specially so that
   long signatures don't cause articles to page unnecessarily.

Of course what really needs fixing is your editor :-)
