I thought about this a while ago. If you were to change your .sig file to 
include "--#" instead of "-- ", it would be fairly easy to write a 
program to do a binary search for the "\n--#\n" string and replace the #
with a space. The advantage of doing it this way is that you can just 
alter the existing file, rather than having to rewrite it, thus making it 
all a lot quicker.

Alternatively, if you always want this signature used, modify your setup 
so that your editor is run via a batch file which adds the signature 
after the edit has completed.

The only obvious "importance" is that it is non-standard, and any 
newsreader which handles .sigs specially will show your .sig to be 
incorrect. As such newsreaders become common, more and more people will 
say "look, that John bloke's got a broken signature". It's a pride thing, 
I suppose :-)
