So can you edit the header at all with CPPnews? Just curious...

I replied to some about this the other week, but didn't post it. Here's
what I said last time:

ftp: pc.usl.edu:/pub/msdos/unixisms
      FILE -rw-r--r-- 97921 bytes 01:00 15 Jan 1991 grep15.zip

A later version (v2.0 of the GNU version) is on

ftp: micros.hensa.ac.uk:/mirrors/simtel/vendors/gnu/gnuish
      FILE -r--r----- 176337 bytes 00:00 29 Mar 1995 grep20as.zip
      FILE -r--r----- 55848 bytes 00:00 29 Mar 1995 grep20ax.zip

*as.zip is the source, and *ax.zip is the executables. This latter
version doesn't have egrep as a separate exe, but uses grep -E as an
equivalent (grep -F is the same as fgrep - note case, -F is not the
same as -f). It comes with a man page as a formatted ASCII DOS file
(i.e. with CRLF at the end of lines not just LF). Note: hensa is
sometimes slow, I had to kick the session (in KA9Q) to get it to start
the download.

Thinking about it, since it's under Simtel it's possible Demon have
copies as well. I didn't try that for my original reply because
ftp.demon.co.uk was down at the time...

These are full GNU versions of grep, and have many more features than
the Borland one. They're pretty fast as well (I've written versions of
fgrep which are slower!). I've been using grep15 for ages with no
problems; grep20 I have only been using a few weeks, but no problems
there either.

Of course, you could always write an awk script to do it <g>...
