That's interesting. I thought it was "developers who use spaces for 
indentation, instead of exactly one tab per indentation level, should 
have their hands cut off".

If indentation is marked by tabs, each person reading the source can 
set the physical width of the indentation to suit themselves. They 
can also use proportional fonts if they wish (although I never 
would). If indentation is marked by spaces, the reader has no 
choices.
